Is there a simple way to estimate duties before shipping? I’m trying to avoid surprises.

Use a landed-cost sheet: item value + freight + insurance + duty + VAT.

Classification is everything. Two similar items can land differently depending on how they’re coded.

Makes sense. Does VAT apply to freight too?

Yes, VAT is calculated on CIF (Cost + Insurance + Freight). That catches people off guard.

Ask for the HS code before you ship. Don’t assume.
